Chandra Bhat, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, University of Texas at Austin

This full day workshop targets students exploring a career as a transportation professional in academia or a practitioner. The program will offer career development guidance for young professionals in areas of networking, preparing for interviews, committee participation, mentoring, and resources available as active members of the Transportation and Development Institute and ASCE.  Also, included will be a presentation on ASCE’s Future World Vision as well as how funding opportunities can be availed for teaching, research, and consulting.  

Specific panels and workshops for prospective faculty and researchers will include preparing for teaching, how to research, pursuing service activities, and how to succeed in achieving tenure. A special session on opportunities for young scholars in transportation AI research will also be featured. These panels and workshops for young faculty are being organized in coordination with the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC).  

For young practitioners, topics will include how to chart leadership paths within ASCE-TDI through various activities at the chapter, section, committee, and board levels, a panel on career advice for young consultants, a path toward P.E. certification, and how to use mentor-mentee relationships effectively.

This workshop will take place at the University of Texas Austin campus. Breakfast and lunch will be included, and the day will conclude with networking reception with ASCE and industry leaders.

Airport pavement design and evaluation workshop - introduction to FAARFIELD2.0 and ICAO's ACR-PCR system

This workshop will cover flexible and rigid pavement design using FAA's newly released FAARFIELD 2.018 software, introduction to ICAO's new ACR-PCR system for aircraft-airport compatibility and determining layer properties for PCR evaluation. Attendees will be required to bring their personal laptop and download software in order to participate.

Simplified highway capacity manual procedures for use in planning, preliminary engineering, design and operations for urban streets and signalized intersections

Besides the detailed and complex operational procedures presented in the Highway Capacity Manual, (HCM) simplified applications for facility planning, design and basic operations are defined and discussed in the Urban Streets and Signalized Intersection Chapters of the manual. Additionally, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 825: Planning and Preliminary Engineering Applications Guide to the Highway Capacity Manual, provides a cost-effective and reliable approach to analysis and a practical introduction to the detailed methodologies of the HCM. At this workshop, participants will learn about these basic and simplified procedures and how they can be applied effectively without needing the detail and complexity of the full HCM operational procedures.
Target audience: Design and Operation Engineers, Planning Professionals, Academics and Students who apply the Highway Capacity Manual concepts and procedures.

Financial assessments of transport infrastructure projects and product delivery

Financial assessments of proposed projects are essential to check whether a project would attract private investors. The workshop focuses on the review and applications of the graphical financial model of the Toolkit for PPP in Roads and Highways, and will introduce more recent multi-sector adaptations of the model, which have been used for preliminary financial evaluations when detailed data and financial arrangements are not yet fully defined. The workshop will include case studies, with numerical exercises. Attendees will deepen their understanding on the key principles to use PPPs (also known as P3s) to deliver essential transport infrastructure. Workshop participants may propose, beforehand, an existing or proposed PPP project to be analyzed during the workshop.
Target Audience:  The target audience would include managers and professionals working in the transport sector, as well as academia and graduate students in transportation.
